How to Store Mushrooms So They Stay Fresh Longer
19 Jul 2026 · 3 min read
Mushrooms are mostly water, which makes them prone to going slimy fast if stored wrong. A few rules make a real difference.
Don't store them in a sealed plastic bag — this traps moisture and speeds up spoilage. A paper bag, or the original packaging with a few holes, works much better since it lets them breathe.
Keep them in the fridge, ideally in a slightly humid drawer, and avoid washing them until right before you cook — added surface moisture shortens their shelf life significantly.
Stored properly, most fresh mushrooms last 5-7 days. If you notice sliminess, a strong ammonia smell, or dark wet patches, that's the sign to use them immediately or discard.
